FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can you help me when other therapies have failed me?
The kind of therapy I do is highly efficient and exceedingly focused.
In this therapy, unlike most, I systematically and continually point out the walls (the
technical word is “defenses”) you use to keep yourself from facing and dealing with the emotions that you block with anxiety. There is no wasted time in each and every session.

The entire focus is on you so that I can help you to pay attention to your emotional
feelings, anxiety symptoms and the walls you unconsciously erect to keep yourself
suffering. In the therapy, you and I will closely monitor your words and body as you stay with or avoid what you are feeling moment-to-moment in the session. I will help you turn against the walls you put-up, which cause you suffering, so that you may face your true feelings and be freed from anxiety and depression.

Jonathan J. Brower Ph.D. in Thousand Oaks, CA

Why is the first session three hours?
The three hours gives you ample time to become aware of your walls (defenses), your anxiety symptoms, and your emotional feelings. You will begin to be aware of how you have strong emotions that are felt in your body, then you become anxious with uncomfortable symptoms inside yourself, and then you put up defenses to avoid your feelings. Within the first three hours you likely will have some breakthroughs to your unconscious. By the end of the session you will have a clearer understanding of what causes your anxiety. You’ll likely be gung-ho for your next session with idea that you will defeat your anxiety.

How long are the sessions after the first one?
After the first three hour session, the other sessions generally range from ninety minutes to three hours.  For most people and most sessions, much deeper and more useful work can be done in ninety minutes than sixty or less minutes.  My goal is to help people get to the core of their problems and resolve them as soon as possible so that their suffering goes away as soon as possible.

What are feelings and impulses?
We humans have emotions. Let’s take anger as an example. When you say, “I’m angry!” you are giving a label to your emotion. When you are angry, there is a physiological arousal in your body. You feel hot and reved-up.  You have a feeling of power in your muscles.  Then you have an impulse, which is wanting the power to come out in the form of a physical attack, such as punching the person in the nose. (note: Being aware of wanting to punch some one’s nose is not the same thing as actually punching the nose.  One can be aware of the impulse and not actually act out the impulse.)

Are panic attacks different than regular anxiety?
Panic attacks are on the far extreme of intense and overwhelming anxiety. They are part of the “package” of anxiety disorders. When people have panic attacks, their tolerance for experiencing their powerful emotional feelings is exceedingly low. In the therapy, we will look at what were the triggers for the attack and get to feelings that preceded the panic attack.

I have anxiety and depression. Do you help me with both?
Yes, most definitely. It is common for people with anxiety to have depression, also. People with anxiety disorders are afraid of their feelings and impulses, one of which is their anger. Depression de-energizes one’s anger. In the therapy, we get to the bottom of what’s under the depression as well as what’s under the anxiety. The two go hand-in-hand.

I have illnesses and pains that have no medical basis. I’m told they are psychologically based. Do you help me with this, too?
Yes, most certainly. When people are afraid of their strong feelings and impulses and they become anxious and/or depressed, they can unconsciously attack themselves with physical pain and discomfort rather than be aware of toward whom they have strong feelings and impulses.
